The Millie Young Practice-as-Research Award was created as a tribute to longtime SAS member Millie Young.
The Society for Animation Studies is now accepting submissions for the 2026 award cycle. To be eligible, animated practice-as-research creative outputs must have been first disseminated publicly between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2025 (projects disseminated on or after January 1, 2026 will be eligible for the 2028 cycle). The deadline for nominations is FEBRUARY 28, 2026 (11:59pm GMT).
Award-Specific Criteria:
- Entries may be single- or co-authored (/edited/ produced)
- Entries to consist of the creative output plus a 500–1000 word research statement that includes (but is not limited to): a statement of the research questions; research rationale; a clear statement of the contribution of the nominee to the output’s creation.
- The creative output may be in any language (Non-English entries must be subtitled in English). The research statement must be in English.
- We will accept animated work produced in any medium/ format, however it must be available to view in its entirety online on a single screen and will be judged in this format.

Further Eligibility Criteria:
- Nominees must be current members of SAS.
- Nominees can only submit to one of the four awards categories in a given awards cycle.
- Nominees cannot make more than one submission in any one category.
- Nominees may not sit on the judging panel of a category for which they have made a submission.
